Primary objective
Plan, develop and undertake community environmental health promotion and enforcement programs and activities to protect the public
from physical, chemical and biological agents in the environment, which may adversely impact on human health.

Context statement
Incorporate working in both an urban and remote community depending on the business needs of the Branch. Employees must travel to
remote communities by light aircraft or road. Hours of work may range to incorporate working within the standard span of hours.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide environmental health services in a professional manner consistent with legislative requirements, good practice and

departmental policy.
2. Act as an authorised officer and delegate of the Chief Health Officer (CHO) in administering the provisions of Northern Territory (NT)

public and environmental health, and food legislation, including statutory surveillance; enforcement activities; special investigations;
insect vector management; public health and food complaint resolution; participating in emergency/disaster relief operations as
required; and other duties as required by the Manager.

3. Engage with communities; urban, rural and remote to assist in improving environmental health outcomes and participate in the
development and implementation of projects and promotion activities.

4. Monitor, record and report on all environmental health activities in accordance with Departmental policy and procedure.
5. Assist Environmental Health practitioners, including Aboriginal Environmental Health Workers and Environmental Health Students in

the development of their skills and duties.
6. Travel to remote sites by air/road, and work outside normal office hours on weekends and public holidays as required.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, Work Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Degree in Environmental Health or degree with appropriate graduate diploma in Environmental Health from an Australian tertiary

institution or ability to enrol in and complete a graduate diploma/degree in Environmental Health within 2 years of appointment.
2. Ability to develop a sound knowledge of legislation, policies and practices relevant to the provision of effective environmental health

services in urban and remote environments and develop skills and knowledge to implement program activities, operate independently
in the field, and provide quality input to program objectives and policies.

3. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to further develop written and oral communication skills, including the ability to
negotiate and liaise at all levels and from a range of social and diverse cultural backgrounds.

4. Hold a current Northern Territory manual driver’s licence or the ability to obtain.

Desirable
1. Additional qualifications e.g. health promotion, vector management, disaster management, food safety auditing.
2. Experience in Aboriginal community environmental health, waste management, land use development or other.

independently in the field, and provide quality input to program objectives and policies.

7. Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including the ability to negotiate and liaise at all levels and from a range of
social and diverse cultural backgrounds, an ability to analyse and address complex issues, think strategically and express ideas and
concepts in a clear and concise manner.

8. Hold a current NT manual drivers licence or the ability to obtain.
